Shrek 2 is big and green

Either way you slice it, Shrek 2 had a great big weekend.
The film has taken in $129 million since its Wednesday North American debut. This early estimate has it beating the previous five-day opening, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, by about $5 million.
Its three-day weekend take, $108 million, puts it second to Spider-Man’s 2002 $114.8 million weekend but the ogre beat the web-slinger’s one-day record: its Saturday haul of $44.8 million vs. Spidey’s $43.6 million.
Last week’s number one, Troy, was in second spot this weekend with an estimated $23.9 million box office. The third spot went to Van Helsing, which crossed the $100 million point in its third week with a $10.5 million weekend.
Lindsay Lohan’s Mean Girls added another $6.9 million, while the Denzel Washington actioner Man on Fire rounded out the top five with $3.6 million.
