The 14th Academy Awards were held on Thursday, February 26, 1942 at the Biltmore Hotel. The United States had just entered the war following the attack on Pearl Harbor in December ’41.

There was talk of canceling the awards due to the war, but perhaps recognizing cinema’s morale-boosting, and yes, propaganda powers, the Academy decided to go ahead.

The 14th ceremony also saw the introduction of the documentary categories.

Heading into the ceremony, the following film(s) had five or more nominations:

  • Sergeant York: 11
  • How Green Was My Valley: 10
  • The Little Foxes: 9
  • Citizen Kane: 9
  • Here Comes Mr. Jordan: 7
  • Hold Back the Dawn: 6
