As the Academy Awards entered the first year of their third decade they had to face a challenge.

The major studios had withdrawn their financial support of the ceremony in order to remove concerns that they were exerting influence over the voters. The lack of funds meant that the Academy couldn’t rent the mammoth Shrine and ended up presenting the awards at their own 985-seat theatre.

Though Johnny Belinda led the pack with 12 nominations two British films, Hamlet and The Red Shows, had seven and five nominations respectively.

Heading into the ceremony, the following film(s) had five or more nominations:

  • Johnny Belinda: 12
  • Hamlet: 7
  • Joan of Arc: 7
  • The Snake Pit: 6
  • The Red Shoes: 5
  • I Remember Mama: 5
