The 2nd Annual Academy Awards were presented at an awards ceremony held in the Cocoanut Grove lounge of The Ambassador Hotel. They were held on April 3, 1930 and covered films released between August 1st, 1928 and July 31st, 1929.
The evening was hosted by director and Academy President William C. deMille, the older brother of fellow director Cecil B. DeMille. The evening also marked the first time that the ceremony was broadcast, with LA radio station KNX sending the results out over the airwaves.
Only seven awards were handed out, with Best Actress going to one of the Academy’s founders, Mary Pickford. Pickford was recognized for her work in Coquette, which was her first talking picture.
