While the venue — Santa Monica Civic Auditorium — and host — Bob Hope — remained the same, there was one sweeping change planned for the broadcast of the 38th Academy Awards on Monday, April 18, 1966: color. Yes, for the first time, those at home with color TV’s were going to see Hollywood’s elite in all their spectacle.
Two future classics led the pack with 10 nominations each: the fun musical The Sound of Music and the epic Doctor Zhivago.
