The 9th Academy Awards, held on March 4, 1937 at the Biltmore Hotel were hosted by George Jessel, the comedic entertainer dubbed the “Toastmaster General of the United States”.
The 9th ceremony introduced the Supporting Actor and Actress categories. Winners in these categories received plaques instead of statuettes until 1943.
Academy President Frank Capra also introduced a rule change this year, which saw nominations coming from a committee of fifty Academy members, while the results were based on voting by the full membership.
