Ellen Pompeo was born in Everett, Massachusetts on November 10th, 1969. She was raised in New York and after moving to Miami for a while headed back to that city. While working as a bartender, she was approached by an agent and soon found herself in commercials.
Pompeo then found herself in guest-starring roles on TV shows like Strangers With Candy with Amy Sedaris and Stephen Colbert and Law and Order with Jerry Orbach and Sam Waterson. In her Law and Order episode, she played a character based on the horrific crimes of Paul Bernardo and Karla Holmolka. More guest-starring roles followed with Get Real, Strong Medicine and The Job.
Moving to LA, Pompeo landed a role in 2002’s Moonlight Mile with Jake Gyllenhaal, Dustin Hoffman and Susan Sarandon. Ellen’s next project was Steven Spileberg’s Catch Me If You Can which had her working with Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks. She then appeared in Daredevil with Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner, and Colin Farrell, but unfortunately most of her scenes were left on the cutting room floor. That same year, she worked with Luke Wilson, Vince Vaughn, Will Ferrell and Jeremy Piven on Old School. That was followed up with roles in Undermind, Hank Azaria’s Nobody’s Perfect, Art Heist and Life of the Party.
Pompeo became a household name in 2005 when she took the lead in the TV show Grey’s Anatomy, which also starred Patrick Dempsey, Sandra Oh, Katherine Heigl and Chandra Wilson.
She married record producer Chris Ivery in 2007.
