Jesse Lamont Martin was born in Virginia on January 18th, 1969. He tended to his acting bug by attending Buffalo School for Visual and Performing Arts and NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts.
Jesse’s first big role on Broadway was in the musical Rent. He gained notice for his performance and in 1997 landed a role in 413 Hope Street. The following year he worked with Adrien Brody in Restaurant and landed a recurring role as Calista Flockhart’s love interest on Ally McBeal.
In 1999, Martin co-starred in the TV movie Deep in My Heart with Anne Bancroft and Gloria Reuben. Martin’s star was about to be polished with the smart casting decision of Dick Wolf when he needed to replace Benjamin Bratt in the long-running series Law & Order. Martin was cast as the third partner for Jerry Orbach’s Detective Lenny Briscoe. The casting was a dream come true for Martin. He loved the show and had always avoided being cast in a smaller guest role, as he felt it could hurt his chances to be a series regular.
