57th Primetime Emmy Awards
Welcome to DigitalHit.com's coverage of the 57th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. The Emmy nominations were announced on July 14th, 2005. The Creative Arts Awards were handed out on September 11th, 2005, while the rest of the awards were handed out on September 18th, 2005.
8:02 PM ET
The ceremony opens with several actors talking about their first Emmy wins. Earth, Wind & Fire rework one of their classics to talk about the past TV season. They're then joined onstage by the Black Eyed Peas.
8:06 PM ET
Emmy host Ellen DeGeneres takes the stage. "As I like to call them Earth, Wind & Fibre." She pointed out that many were wearing magnolias to remember the victims of Katrina. She said that this is the second time she's hosted after a national tragedy. "Next month I'm hosting the North Korean People's Choice Awards."
"If you don't win tonight, it doesn't mean you're not a good person. It means you're not a good actor."
"Let's get our priorities straight. Winning an Emmy is not important. Winning an Oscar is. I'd love to host that show."
8:12 PM ET
The cast of the Desperate Housewives present the first Emmy of the night, Best Supporting Actor in Comedy. And the Emmy goes to Brad Garrett for Everybody Loves Raymond.
"I have to dedicate this to Britney and her baby. We had an amazing run."
8:20 PM ET
Ellen sits in audience with Eva Longoria to discuss not being nominated. The camera pulls back to show she's in the upper balcony.
Kiefer Sutherland and Kyra Sedgwick present the Emmy for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. And the Emmy goes to William Shatner for Boston Legal.
8:23 PM ET
Ellen's at the bar trying to get a drink. She introduces the first segment of Emmy Idol. Donald Trump and Megan Mullally sing the theme to Green Acres.
Two and a Half Men's Jon Cryer and Charlie Sheen present the nominees for Outstanding Individual Performance In A Variety Or Music Program. Hugh Jackman wins for hosting the Tony Awards.
8:33 PM ET
The Blue Man Group present the Emmy for Outstanding Reality-Competition Program. And the Emmy goes to The Amazing Race. Zoinks. The pace of tonight's program is sluggish.
8:37 PM ET
Hugh Laurie and Zach Braff present Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. Braff thinks they're supposed to do British accents, while Laurie tries to explain he is British. And the Emmy goes to Blythe Danner for Huff. Danner makes the first political comment of the night: "Our kids in Iraq: Let's get them out of there!"
8:44 PM ET
Jason Lee and Debra Messing stroll out to present Best Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or Movie. And the Emmy goes to Paul Newman. Newman wasn't there.
Next up we have Lauren Graham and Jennifer Love Hewitt present Best Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Movie. And the Emmy goes to Jane Alexander.
8:48 PM ET
Neal Patrick Harris and Alyson Hannigan introduce Kristen Bell singing the theme from Fame. Whoever thought of this segment sould be sent to a deserted island.
Rachel Bilson and Chris O'Donnell talk about the comedy guest appearance winners from last week. The two winners, Bobby Cannavale and Kathryn Joosten, present the Emmy for Outstanding Directing For A Variety, Music Or Comedy Program. And the Emmy goes to Bucky Gunts for The Games Of The XXVIII Olympiad - Opening Ceremony. They also present the Emmy for Outstanding Writing For A Variety, Music Or Comedy Program to The Daily Show.
9:01 PM ET
Adrian Grenier and Mischa Barton trip over some clunky comedy lines and then present the Emmy for Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. And the Emmy goes to Doris Roberts for Everybody Loves Raymond.
9:03 PM ET
David Letterman takes to the stage to pay a heartfelt tribute to Johnny Carson.
9:15 PM ET
The cast of Everybody Loves Raymond appear together on stage to present the Emmy for Outstanding Variety, Music Or Comedy Series. And the Emmy goes to The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. He paid tribute to Letterman, saying that the way Letterman feels about Carson is the way he feels about Letterman.
9:20 PM ET
Portia De Rossi introduces Gary Dourdan and Macy Gray, who perform the theme from The Jeffersons.
9:21 PM ET
Ellen walks out with a sparkler and unicycle. She does nothing with them, but introduces Patricia Arquette. Arquette introduces the two winners for Guest performances in a drama. The two winners were Amanda Plummer and Ray Liotta. Ray introduces the nominees for best direction in a drama series. And the Emmy goes to J.J. Abrams for Lost. Liotta also presents the award for Drama Series Writing. And the Emmy goes to House's David Shore.
9:32 PM ET
Halle Berry has the task of presenting the Emmy for Outstanding Actor in a Miniseries or Movie. And the Emmy goes to Geoffrey Rush for The Life and Death of Peter Sellers.
9:36 PM ET
Wow. We're only an hour and a half in. Feels longer. So Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey are here to present Directing for a Movie or Miniseries. Dempsey's joke falls very flat. And the Emmy goes to Stephen Hopkins for The Life and Death of Peter Sellers. The pair then present the Emmy for Movie/Miniseries writing to Peter Sellers' Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely.
9:44 PM ET
Geena Davis and Matthew Fox present the Lead Actress in a Miniseries/Movie Emmy. And the Emmy goes to a surprised S. Epetha Merkeson for Lackawana Blues. She freaks out because she put her acceptance speech down her dress and it fell down. Her speech is the most honest and funniest tonight.
9:48 PM ET
Jon Stewart says the Emmys asked him to do something topical, but to pretape it because of the FCC. His taped segement attacks the government over the response to Katrina, but it's so cut up, it sounds like praise. Very funny. He then presents the Emmy for Comedy Series Direction. And the Emmy goes to Charles McDougal for Desperate Housewives. Stewart then presents the Comedy Series Writing Emmy. And the Emmy goes to Mitchell Hurwitz and Jim Valley for Arrested Development. They joke that they've won again for a show that nobody watches.
9:59 PM ET
One hour to go! Quentin Tarantino and Marg Helgenberger team up to present the Emmy for Outstanding Made for TV Movie. And the Emmy goes to Warm Springs.
10:03 PM ET
Jeff Probst and Phil Keoghan give props to the trophy girls and then intoduce William Shatner and Frederica von Stade in an operatic rendition of the Star Trek theme.
10:05 PM ET
Ellen tells us the Emmy Idol segment is over -- thankfuly and now people can vote. Wow, does life get any better?
10:10 PM ET
Mariska Hargitay and Jimmy Smits are on stage now to handle the presenting duties for Outstanding Miniseries. And the Emmy goes to The Lost Prince.
10:13 PM ET
Dick Askin, the Chairman & CEO of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and Alan Alda pay tribute to Dan Rather, Tom Brokaw and the late Peter Jennings.
10:18 PM ET
Tom Brokaw and Dan Rather get a standing ovation as they come out on stage. They pay tribute to Jennings and to the hard work of the news crews covering Katrina.
10:29 PM ET
Half an hour (hopefully!) to go. Conan O'Brien's task is to present Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. Since only one of the five nominees can win, O'Brien jokes that "I can live out my dream of disappointing four women at once." And the Emmy goes to Felicity Huffman for Desperate Housewives. She's overwhelmed. The best part is when she thanks William H. Macy for "taking a chubby girl with glasses into a corn patch, kissing her and making me his wife."
10:33 PM ET
James Spader follows up with the presentation of Lead Actress in a Drama Series. And the Emmy goes to Patricia Arquette for Medium. She also pleads for assistance to the Katrina victims and a safe return for the troops.
10:36 PM ET
It's time for the In Memoriam segment.

10:53 PM ET
Ellen announces that Donald Trump and Megan Mullally won Emmy Idol.
Hugh Jackman and Whoopi Goldberg announce the nominees for Outstanding Drama Series. Jackman pays tribute to Ellen, noting that he and Whoopi have both hosted awards shows. "It takes months of work and preparations; much like a photo shoot of the cast of Desperate Housewives." And the Emmy goes to Lost.
10:58 PM ET
Whoopi and Hugh now present the fianl award of the night, Outstanding Comedy Series. And the Emmy goes to Everybody Loves Raymond. Creator Phil Rosenthal says "Now the show is over people ask if that's the end of the sitcom. I say yes, and then the end of laugh, followed by smiling."
