65th Primetime Emmy Awards
Welcome to DigitalHit.com's coverage of the 65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, which took place on September 22nd, 2013.
8:04 PM
Neil Patrick Harris enters a room full of monitors where he binge watches the entire season of television before walking on stage to host tonight's show.
8:09 PM
Harris welcomes us to the 65th Primetime Emmy Awards. "Tonight, we celebrate what television is all about: for our younger audience, that's the thing you watch on your phones," says Harris. "We're here to honor the best and the brightest talents in our industry. They're responsible for the programs that this year made us laugh, made us cry, and for the front row, made them rich."
Neil gets interrupted by last year's host, Jimmy Kimmel, then Jane Lynch. Another former host, Jimmy Fallon, suggest they need a song and dance number. Then Conan O'Brien storms in and complains about the good ol' days. As they argue onstage, audience member Kevin Spacey turns to the camera and says, "I was promised the hosting job this year, and they turned me down. They said they wanted someone more...likeable. Really? You look at those blabbering buffoons. They couldn't host a child's birthday party. Getting them all to sabotage Neil was almost too easy. And i believe the cherry on the proverbial sundae is about to be served."
Harris gets heckled by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler before they take the stage.
8:16 PM
Poehler and Fey are the night's first presenters, handing out the hardware for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. And the Emmy goes to Merritt Wever for Nurse Jackie. Her speech is short and sweet: "Thank you so much. Um, I gotta go. Bye."
8:23 PM
NPH intros LL Cool J and Malin Ackerman. They talk about the writers and the nominees for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series. And the Emmy goes to Tina Fey and Tracey Wigfield for 30 Rock.
“I just want to say that I share this award with my partner of seven years, Robert Carlock. There are not many people in this world who make me feel lazy and stupid and by comparison you made me feel that way every day, and for that, I thank you.” - Tina Fey
8:26 PM
"These two performing sisters are very different from the performing sisters I saw in Thailand three years ago," says Harris as he intros Zooey and Emily Deschanel. And the Emmy goes to Tony Hale for Veep. He thanks the cast and crew and pays tribute to the Young Actor's Theater in Tallahassee, Florida "...that made a huge difference in my life."
8:29 PM
Robin Williams pays a loving tribute to his mentor, Jonathan Winters. He says he told Winters he was his mentor "...and he said, 'Please, I prefer idol.' but it was true. I knew it the moment I saw him on 'The Tonight Show' and Jack Paar handed him a stick. What happened next was a genius at play. Jon and that stick transformed into a dozen different characters, from a fly fisherman to lion tamer to Bing Crosby playing a round of golf."
8:36 PM
Harris intros "my biological parents" Jon Hamm and Alec Baldwin, who present Outstanding Lead Actess in a Comedy. And the Emmy goes to Julia Louis-Dreyfus, her fourth Emmy win and sixteenth nomination. She brings Tony Hale up with her to hold her bag and remind her to thank her family.
8:40 PM
Will Arnett and Margo Martindale, stars of The Millers are up next. She plugs the show and when Will questions if this is really the place, she says, "I get it. You have too much integrity to shamelessly promote. I'm sure tomorrow morning everyone on our crew who needs their job to feed their children will be very impressed with your integrity." They list the nominees for Outstanding Guest Actor and Actress on a Comedy Series, which were presented last week to Bob Newhart and Melissa Leo. Leo comes out to present Outstanding Directing For A Comedy Series. And the Emmy goes to Gail Mancuso for Modern Family.
“A couple of shout-outs to my favorite teachers. I had an eighth grade teacher, Mr. Bright, who taught me that, that it wasn't only about English and math, that he taught me about self-confidence.” - Gail Mancuso
8:45 PM
Jimmy Kimmell and Sofia Vergara talk about laughter being the best medicine. "If you got sick and the doctor just told to you laugh, you could sue him." They present Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. And the Emmy goes to Jim Parsons for The Big Bang Theory, his third Emmy win and fifth consecutive nomination.
8:49 PM
Rob Reiner pays tribute to his former All in the Family co-star, Jean Stapleton.
“Whether it's to a relative, a friend or even to a beloved TV character. This year one person gave me the chance to bid farewell to all three. It also marked the second time we said goodbye to Edith Bunker. Jean Stapleton, the wonderful actress, brought humor and heart and soul to Edith Bunker, my TV mother-in-law. Good, capable of boundless unconditional love and support. As a performer, she was fearless, willing to try anything. Many of Edith's most memorable qualities were inventions of Jean's. Her voice, her brilliant comedic timing, her ability to stand up to Archie and in many scenes, Her ability to break your heart. I had already left All in the Family to go on to other things, and when the show became Archie Bunker's Place, Jean also felt it was time to move on and let Edith go. Norman Lear, our show's creator, had a tough decision, but he ultimately determined that the death of Edith Bunker would be a dramatic and emotional point for the series. So, in 1980, the nation said goodbye to Edith Bunker. This past may, death came to Jean Stapleton. And when I heard the news, I think all of us who knew Jean felt the way Archie did when he said goodbye to Edith, 'You had no right to leave me that way, without giving me just one more chance to say I love you.'” - Rob Reiner
8:55 PM
Neil introduces Matt Damon and Michael Douglas, who introduce a performance by Elton John. Before performing, he talks about the nominations that the Liberace biopic Behind the Candelabra has earned.
“ This year, a television film about a musician scored 15 Emmy nominations, including two for the blokes who just welcomed me to this stage. That musician was Liberace, and this guy played a mean piano. His program aired in England, so I was keenly aware of his enormous talent and his impact on the musical world. And my dress sense, of course. What I was not aware of until years later was his lifestyle, yeah, right.” - Elton John
9:03 PM
After the performance, Matt and Michael present Outstanding Lead Actress In A Miniseries Or A Movie. And the Emmy goes to Laura Linney for The Big C: Hereafter. She's not there to accept.
9:10 PM
The cast of How I Met Your Mother talk about EHD (Excessive Hosting Disorder), a disease that Harris suffer from. Luckily it can be cured by a visit to "The Ryan Seacrest Center for Excessive Hosting."
9:13 PM
Connie Britton and Blair Underwood present Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series. And the Emmy goes to Homeland's Henry Bromell. His widow accepts the award. Connie and Blair then present Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. And the Emmy goes to Anna Gunn for Breaking Bad.
9:17 PM
Jane Lynch pays tribute to her Glee co-star Cory Monteith.
“Television shows become like family. This summer, on our show glee, we suffered a painful death in our family. Cory Monteith played Finn Hudson — a star quarterback turned wide-eyed, heartfelt glee singer and from the first time you saw Cory, he had a star quality and genuine sweetness that made it impossible not to fall in love with him. Millions did fall in love with Cory, and I am here to say all that warmth, that charm, that openhearted quality we loved in Cory was no act. Cory was a beautiful soul. He was not perfect, which many of us here tonight can relate to. His death is a tragic reminder of the rapacious, senseless destruction that is brought on by addiction. Tonight we remember Cory for all he was and mourn the loss of all he could have been. To a generation that loved Cory so, please know this gifted and wonderful young man was worthy of your love. And if you were lucky enough to know Cory as we did, and witness first hand Cory's goofy, breezy sense of humor, his natural instinct for inclusiveness and his unbridled sense of generosity — day in and day out — I promise you'd have loved him even more.” - Jane Lynch
9:25 PM
NPH launches into a song called "The Number in the Middle of the Show." He's joined by Nathan Filion and Sarah Silverman.
9:28 PM
Mindy Kaling and Arrow's Stephen Amell present Outstanding Reality Competition Program. And the Emmy goes to The Voice. Producer Mark Burnett accepts.
9:35 PM
Diahann Carroll and Kerry Washington are out next. Kerry pays tributer to Diahann, "a hero of mine, and the first African-American Emmy nominee ever — male or female." They present Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. And the Emmy goes to Bobby Cannavale for Boardwalk Empire.
“I love my son Jake who I took to college three weeks ago and is watching with his dorm mates. I love you, son. Terry Winter who created this great role and created this great series. and Mr. Scorsese — well, um, he's great. And Tim van Patten who directed me on the weirdest first day of work I've ever had in my life, 12 hours of beating somebody to death with four different kinds of rubber wrenches.” - Bobby Cannavale
9:40 PM
Dylan McDermott and Julianna Margulies stroll out next to present Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. And the Emmy goes to Jeff Daniels for The Newsroom.
“The last thing I won was in, a few years ago for Squid and the Whale. I won the best actor over 50 from the AARP. With all due respect to the AARP, this is better.” - Jeff Daniels
9:43 PM
We now see a tribute to the 50th anniversary of the Kennedy assassination, introduced by Don Cheadle. He also reminds us of the 50th anniversary of The Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show. He then introduces Carrie Underwood singing "Yesterday".
9:54 PM
NPH intros the Ernst & Young accountants as Bob Newhart tags along for the ride. The Jimmy Fallon tries to introduce the nominees for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series as his mike descends into the stage. And the Emmy goes to Claire Danes for Homeland.
“I think all actors know how indebtedded we are to our writers, especially in television. And we happen to have one of the most experienced intrepid teams of writers in the business. I have to take a moment to acknowledge our most treasured — one of our very most treasured writers, Henry Brummel, who won tonight, and he passed away in — in March. And we just love him so much. He was a brilliant person and so kind and we think of him every day as we continue to work on the show that he helped define.” - Claire Danes
9:58 PM
Under the Dome's Dean Norris and Game of Throne's Emilia Clarke talk about the Guest Actor/Actress in a Drama category that was handed out last week. The winners, Carrie Preston and Dan Bucatinsky, now present Outstanding Ditrecting for a Drama Series. David Fincher wins for House of Cards but he's not there to accept.

“We all of us first want to thank The Daily Show for setting the standard and being a constrant inspiration for all of us here.” - Stephen Colbert
Jim and Bob then present Outstanding Directing for a Variety Series. And the Emmy goes to Don Roy King for Saturday Night Live.
10:09 PM
Michael J. Fox pays tribute to Family Ties creator Gary David Goldberg.
“One of those individuals who not only had a far-reaching effect on the business he loved. To put it simply, he changed my life. To his peers, Gary David Goldberg was the Emmy-winning creator and producer of Family Ties and co-creator of Spin City, among others. To me, Gary was my mentor, benefactor, partner, second father and beloved friend. The programs he wrote were game- changers, like MASH, The Bob Newhart Show and Lou Grant. The characters he created not only reflected families we recognized, they symbolized the families we wanted to be. In addition to his enormous talent, Gary had a generous spirit and a great laugh. Whenever I catch a re-run of one of our shows, I can hear him — not in my head — right there on the soundtrack. Gary had one of the most recognizable and genuine laughs in the history of TV. More than just a gut reaction, it was a wave of appreciation, and it meant the world to all of us. His laughter, his approval, his friendship are what I'll miss most of all.” - Michael J. Fox
10:15 PM
Outstanding choreography gets a video preparing for the production number and the production number itself which pays tribute to various nominated series. Tim Gunn and Heidi Klum then present the Emmy for Outstanding Choreography. And the Emmy goes to Derek Hough for Dancing with the Stars.
10:22 PM
Harris introduces his How I Met Your Mother co-stars Cobie Smulders and Alyson Hannigan. They present Outstanding Variety Series to The Colbert Report.
“As I said before, it's sort of a cliche to say it's an honor just to be nominated, but it's more than that. It's also a lie. This is way better.” - Stephen Colbert
10:24 PM
Edie Falco pays tribute to James Gandolfini.
“...his portrayal of Tony Soprano had such depth and dimension that there are still a lot of people who have a hard time believing that's not who he really was. Well, i'm here to tell you, Jim was really quite different. He had tremendous warmth and heart. He was kind. He was uniquely generous. One gets the feeling that Jim was never entirely comfortable with all the attention he got, usually because he said it every chance he got. He was far more interested in turning the light on to people that he considered more worthy. When he was interviewing Iraqi war veterans for a project that was very close to his heart, he did so with such genuine interest and respect and humility. Over the years, I was particularly moved by Jim's devotion to his family and to his fierce loyalty to his friends, to all the people in his life. You can ask anybody who knew him if you needed anything at all, ever, Jim was there to take care of it before you even had a chance to ask. You all knew James Gandolfini, the actor. I was lucky enough to know Jim the man. For 10 years as his close colleague and his pretend life partner and for many more years as his friend, and it's Jim, the man, the very dear man that I will miss most of all.” - Edie Falco
10:32 PM
