66th Primetime Emmy Awards
Welcome to DigitalHit.com's coverage of the 66th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, which took place on August 25th, 2014.
8:00 PM
Host Seth Meyers takes to the stage. "This year we're doing the Emmys on a Monday night in August, which if I understand television means the Emmys are about to get canceled."
"We're doing this show on Monday in part because MTV aired the Video Music Awards last night. That's right, MTV still has an award show for music videos even though they no longer show music videos. That's like network TV holding an awards show and giving all the trophies to cable and Netflix."
"Jokes are like nominees. They can't all be winners."
"I'd like to take a moment to congratulate all the writers in the room, but they're seated too far away for them to hear me."
"HBO is like the kid you grew up with who ended up doing way better than you expected," said Meyer.
8:09 PM
Tonight's first presenter is Amy Poehler. She's presenting Supporting Actor in a Comedy. And the Emmy goes to Ty Burrell for Modern Family. He said his speech was written by the kids in Modern Family
“No, seriously, the adults really do deserve the Emmys in this cast because we have more material, we work harder, and we're always so prepared. Sometimes it's hard to tell from the written word, so to be clear, that was sarcasm.” - Ty Burrell
8:16 PM
Zooey Deschanel and Allison Williams are the next presenters. They're presenting Outstanding Writing For A Comedy Series. And the Emmy goes to Louis C.K.
“I'd like to thank Ron Lynch who gave me my first shot as a comedian and Conan O'Brien who gave me my first job on television. That goes way back.” - Louis C.K.
8:18 PM
Jimmy Kimmel is the next presenter, but first he roasts Matthew McConaughey.
"You know this is our awards show, right? for television. Why is Matthew McConaughey nominated for television? He doesn't even own a television. He traded his television for a conch shell full of weed. You were great in "The True Detective," you may well be the best actor, but you just won the Oscar like five months ago. No offense, but how many of those little speeches are we supposed to sit through? All right, all right, all right already," says Kimmel.Jimmy's giving out Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. And the Emmy goes to Allison Janney for Mom.
“Listen, i play a mom on "Mom," I play a grandmother, and as of last season I play a great-grandmother, and I'm just crossing my fingers this season that I'll be incontinent.” - Allison Janney
8:27 PM
Hayden Panettiere introduces the winners of Guest Actor and Actress for a Comedy Series: Jimmy Fallon and Uzo Aduba. Uzo joins Hayden to present Director in a Comedy Series. And the Emmy goes to Gail Mancuso for Modern Family.
“I feel like I'm going to lose it. I feel like I want to look at my cast because I love them so much. If you don't mind, Matthew McConaughey, I'm just going to make eye contact with you right now. So I'm going to talk about how great my producers are over there. Jeff Morton, Steve Levitan, Chris Lloyd -- I can't look at them because I'll cry.” - Gail Mancuso
8:33 PM
Seth and Billy Eichner take to the streets of New York to talk about the Emmys. Eichner approaches one woman and says, "You're a lesbian, are you watching Orange is the New Black?" The startled woman replies, "I do, but I'm not a lesbian."
8:36 PM
Bryan Cranston and Julia Louis-Dreyfus are presenting Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. She says Bryan reminds her of a guest actor on Seinfeld and he has trouble convincing her that they shared a kiss on the show. And the Emmy goes to Jim Parsons for The Big Bang Theory.
“I really don't believe this. I want to start out by saying something to the other nominees in the category. To say that I watch your work and I feel inspired is a bit of an understatement. I watch you work, and all of you, and I see you people doing things that I couldn't do. I see people doing things that I wouldn't do. I see people doing things, in all seriousness, that are so divergent and all over the place and all of us doing such different things that I do pray to do one day, I really do. But that's the landscape we live in. This is a long way of saying there is no accounting for taste, and that it's through a lot of good fortune I stand up here tonight.” - Jim Parsons
8:43 PM
Jimmy Fallon is up next and he's here with the task of presenting Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series. And the Emmy goes to Julia Louis-Dreyfus for Veep. As she makes her way to the stage, Bryan Cranston dramatically kisses her. When she gets to the stage she says, "Yeah, yeah, he was on Seinfeld. Yeah."
“I would love to thank HBO, because honestly, I've worked in a lot of places in this town and it's absolutely my favorite place I've ever worked.” - Julia Louis-Dreyfus
8:47 PM
Mindy Kaling and John Mulaney are presenting Reality Competition Program. And the Emmy goes to The Amazing Race, their tenth win in this category.
“The world is not a bad place, actually. You can go safely to a lot of places, contrary to what they make you believe.” - Bertram van Munster
8:55 PM
Seth takes questions from the audience. Jon Hamm asks if the show will be televised. Melissa McCarthy asks if her car will be towed. Andre Braugher asks for the bathroom key, which tuens out to be a key with an Emmy attached to it. Julianna Margulies asks if she can have Maggie Smith's Emmy if she wins, but Seth says it's already been promised to Hamm. Fred Armisen suggests doing the Emmys every year.
8:57 PM
Allison Janney and Octavia Spencer present Outstanding Writing For A Miniseries, Movie Or A Dramatic Special. And the Emmy goes to Steven Moffat for Sherlock: His Last Vow.
“Well, thank you to PBS Masterpiece for suggesting that I prepare something in advance in the event I won, and apologies to the same for not doing that. To the BBC, the greatest broadcaster in the world, and to Heartswood Films who actually make it. A huge thanks to my brilliant, sexy producer whom I also married. And although I would marry him I haven't married Mark Gatiss. He should be up here because every word of Sherlock is done to him as well, and I apologize for not being up here at the same time.” - Steven Moffat
Janney and Spencer then present Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Miniseries Or A Movie. And the Emmy goes to Kathy Bates for American Horror Story: Coven.
“Okay, well, I was sure I wasn't going to win, I'm serious, because the first place I went to when I got here was the green room, and it had the guys with the little silver suitcase and they had it open like they were going through the winners and losers. They caught my eye when I walked in and they both kind of tilted their heads in that sort of social worker "I'm sorry" way. I came in here tonight and I was way over there and I was like, that's right, I'm not going to win.” - Kathy Bates
9:06 PM
Stephen Colbert strolls out to present Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Miniseries Or A Movie. And the Emmy goes to Martin Freeman for Sherlock: His Last Vow. He's not there.
9:09 PM
Kate Walsh and Scott Bakula present Outstanding Directing For A Miniseries, Movie Or A Dramatic Special. And the Emmy goes to Colin Bucksey for Fargo.
“This is such a surprise I'm so glad I got back from the loo in time.” - Colin Bucksey
9:16 PM
Amy Poehler and Seth are introducing Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson by testing intros:
"One is named after a disciple of Jesus, the other is named after a boner."
"Please welcome two gentlemen whose names are also menu items in most marijuana dispensaries."
"For me, watching these next two presenters in True Detective was like making love. I didn't understand what was going, but boy did I like it."
"Please welcome two gentlemen who seem like they would be chatty in the sack."
Matthew and Woody come out to present Outstanding Lead Actor In A Miniseries Or A Movie. And the Emmy goes to Sherlock: His Last Vow's Benedict Cumberbatch. He's not there.
9:25 PM
Liev Schreiber and Kerry Washington are presenting Outstanding Lead Actress In A Miniseries Or A Movie. And the Emmy goes to Jessica Lange for American Horror Story: Coven.
9:28 PM
Andy Samberg joins Seth. They talk about theme songs for shows and how they deserve lyrics. Weird Al Yankovic then gives us some lyrics for the most popular shows. Despite the fact that he's recently had a number one on Billboard, the piece falls flat.
9:33 PM
Lena Headey is presenting Outstanding Miniseries. And the Emmy goes to Fargo. Accepting is writer-producer Noah Hawley.
“This is a true story. The first time I talked to Joel and Ethan Coen is when they called me after they read the script, and I had a baby strapped to me. I mean, my baby, not a random baby. And they said, 'Look, we hate imitation, but it was eerie reading this because it felt like you were channelling us.' So who else can I thank but Joel and Ethan Coen who, of course, don't watch the Emmys. But they let me pretend if only for five minutes that I was one of the greatest filmmakers alive, and I thank them for that.” - Noah Hawley
9:40 PM
Julianna Margulies is now presenting Outstanding Television Movie. And the Emmy goes to The Normal Heart. Executive producer Ryan Murphy accepts.
“Thanks to our wonderful cast, particularly a shoutout to Julia Roberts and Mark Ruffalo who got this movie made. After 30 years, it took the superpowers of Erin Brockovich and the Incredible Hulk to finally get this thing alive. We're going to use the rest of our time to ask young people watching to become Larry Kramers, to find a cause that you will believe in, that you will fight for, that you will die for. Go online. Look up AMFAR, look up the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. This is for all the hundreds of thousands of artists who have passed from HIV/AIDS since 1981. Your memory and your passion burns on in us and this is for them.” - Ryan Murphy
9:43 PM
Seth introduces Ricky Gervais. He says he's presenting "the big one": Outstanding Writing For A Variety Special. And the Emmy goes to Sarah Silverman for Sarah Silverman: We Are Miracles.
“Thank you to my Jews at CAA: Larry, Moe, Curly and Nick Nuciforo.” - Sarah Silverman
9:51 PM
Key and Peele are introducing the accountants. Woohoo, they're from Ernst and Young.
9:53 PM
Chris Hardwick is presenting Outstanding Directing For A Variety Series but first corrects internet trolls on the correct use of "you're" and "your". And the Emmy goes to Glenn Weiss for the 67th Tony Awards. He speaks from the control room, as he's currently directing this show.
“This is beyond surreal and also awesome doing this while you're doing a show.” - Glenn Weiss
9:56 PM
Gwen Stefani and Proactiv+ spokesman Adam Levine present Outstanding Variety Series. And the Emmy goes to The Colbert Report. Stefani flubbed the name (like Travolta's "Adele Dazeem") calling it the "Colbort Report" so Jimmy Fallon accepts (just in case she was wrong) as Colbert whispers his speech in his ear.
“Everyone's work on the show for the last nine years...and you know who you are. If you don't know who you are, go to IMDB. It's very comprehensive so you could probably -- if you always wanted to work on the show and you don't have a chance now because it's ending, just put your name on IMDB and I'll back you up. Just call yourself like a creative consultant.” - Stephen Colbert, via Jimmy Fallon
10:04 PM
Sofia Vergara introduces the president of the Television Academy, Bruce Rosenblum. He makes the loevly Sofia stand on a revolving platform as he gives his speech.
10:06 PM
Lucy Liu comes out to present Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Drama Series. And the Emmy goes to Aaron Paul for Breaking Bad.
“My god, Breaking Bad. It has changed my life and I'm standing up here because of one man, and that is Vince Gilligan. Thank you so much, Vince! Thank you for believing in me, trusting in me to play this guy. I miss him. I love him. The best cast and crew I've ever worked with and for. Bryan, there's not a -- there's not a single day that goes by that I do not miss running to work to be able to work opposite of you, my friend. I've learned so much onscreen and off.” - Aaron Paul
10:11 PM
It's time for the In Memoriam segment. Sara Bareilles sings "Smile".
10:16 PM
Billy Crystal pays tribute to Robin Williams, "It's very hard to talk about him in the past because he was so present in all our lives."
“As genius as he was on stage, he was the greatest friend you could ever imagine. Supportive, protective, loving. It's very hard to talk about him in the past because he was so present in all of our lives. For almost forty years, he was the brightest star in the comedy galaxy. But while some of the brightest of our celestial bodies are actually extinct now, their energy long since cooled, miraculously, because they float in the heavens so far away from us now, their beautiful light will continue to shine on us forever. And the glow will be so bright, it will warm your heart, it'll make your eyes glisten, and you'll think to yourselves, 'Robin Williams. What a concept.'” - Billy Crystal
10:24 PM
Debra Messing and Jim Parsons team up to present Outstanding Directing For A Drama Series. And the Emmy goes to Cary Joji Fukunaga for True Detective.
“Man, I should have written something. This is awesome. You're going to need a broom to sweep up the names I'm about to drop.” - Cary Joji Fukunaga
Debra and Jim then present Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Drama Series. And the Emmy goes to Breaking Bad's Anna Gunn.
“It is luck that brought me seven years ago to getting a phone call from Sharon Bialy, our amazing casting director, who said, 'Get your patootie in here and read for the show. It's the best thing that you -- it's the best pilot script that I've ever seen.' She was right, and it turned into the most extraordinary journey over the past seven years and I have been unbelievably fortunate. Vince Gilligan, you are the reason for that, so thank you.” - Anna Gunn
10:34 PM
As part of her "begging TV for forgiveness tour", Katherine Heigl announces the winners of the guest roles in a drama series. Allsion Janney and Joe Morton won, and Joe presents Outstanding Writing For A Drama Series. And the Emmy goes to Moira Walley-Beckett for Breaking Bad.
“Vince Gilligan, this is your fault! Thank you for your mentorship and your mad skills, yo!” - Moira Walley-Beckett
10:37 PM
Viola Davis is now here to present Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series. And the Emmy goes to Julianna Margulies for The Good Wife.
“Thank you so much. What a wonderful time for women on television. And all the women that I'm nominated with here tonight is such a testament to that. But truly this belongs to Robert and Michelle King. All our writers who never cease to amaze me with 22 episodes a year. And I have to thank my gorgeous cast. You are spectacular.” - Julianna Margulies
10:45 PM
Julia Roberts is presenting Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series. And the Emmy goes to Bryan Cranston for Breaking Bad
“Oh, wow. even I thought about voting for Matthew. I don't know why I have been blessed with an abundance of good fortune in my life. I was a kid who always looked for the shortcut, schemer. My own family nicknamed me Sneaky Pete. My own family. So I did happen to stumble upon finding a passion that created a seed and bloomed into something so wonderful for me. I love to act. It is a passion of mine and I will do it until my last breath. I can only say that I have gratitude for everything that has happened. I have gratitude for the Academy for this lovely honor, to the love of my family, I love you guys, to gratitude for AMC and Sony and especially Vince Gilligan to make this possible for me to have this role of a lifetime. Gratitude for our writers, our directors, the wonderful crew that we have in New Mexico and this intimate cast that we created. My dear friend Aaron Paul, I love you so much. You were with me all the way and I appreciate that and helping each other. To Anna Gunn, my television wife extraordinaire. I love you, and especially those scenes in bed. Finally, I want to just say that I'd like to dedicate this award to all the Sneaky Petes of the world who thought that maybe settling for mediocrity was it was a good ideas, because it was safe. Don't do it, take a chance, take a risk, find that passion, rekindle it. Fall in love all over again. It's really worth it.” - Bryan Cranston
10:51 PM
Jay Leno presents Comedy Series. And the Emmy goes to Modern Family. Steven Levitan accepts.
“ When my daughter was 10, she came to work with me on a day that we were trying to come up with a story. She sat with a roomful of writers watching them think, talk, share anecdotes, watch YouTube videos, anything to spark an idea. And eight long hours later, we had absolutely nothing. We went home and I was a little bit embarrassed. Then she looked up at me with big eyes and she said, 'Thanks for taking me to work with you, Daddy. I really loved it so much. I learned what you did and it makes me so proud.' And then she turned to the kitchen and said to my wife, 'It's a wonder we have a roof over our heads.'” - Steven Levitan
10:57 PM
Halle Berry is here to present the night's final award, Outstanding Drama Series. And the Emmy goes to Breaking Bad. Vince Gilligan accepts.
“Thank you so much for this wonderful farewell to our show. you have been very kind to us, indeed. And congratulations to all the other nominees who we are honored to stand amongst. This is indeed a wonderful time to be working in television. I think you all know that. We're lucky all to be working now.” - Vince Gilligan
