18th Hollywood Film Awards Results and Commentary (2014)

Host Queen Latifah welcomes us to the first televised edition of the Hollywood Film Awards, joking that there wasn’t anything wrong with your PVR if you didn’t record the first seventeen.

Robert Downey Jr. is the night’s first presenter. He’s presenting Hollywood Supporting Actor to Robert Duvall for his work in The Judge. (Oh, by the way, everyone already knows they’ve been chosen by the HFA advisory panel as honorees, so there are no surprises tonight.)

Duvall takes to the stage. “It’s been a while since anything in my hands felt so good.”

Laura Dern then gets the opportunity to present Breakout Performance by an Actress. She’s honoring Shailene Woodley for her work in The Fault in Our Stars .

Queen Latifah talks to Michael Keaton in the audience before introducing Christoph Waltz, who’s honoring Keira Knightley’s work in The Imitation Game.

Reese Witherspoon is now presenting the Breakthrough Director Award to Wild’s Jean-Marc Vallée.

Jean-Marc praises his Wild star, Reese, for her work in the film.

Latifah now introduces Jared Leto, who’s presenting Breakout Performance Actor to Eddie Redmayne. Eddie praises Jared’s work in his speech.

Hilary Swank honors Gillian Flynn with the Hollywood Screenwriter Award for her script for Gone Girl.

Randy Jackson and Steven Tyler introduce Janelle Monáe’s performance of “What is Love” from Rio 2. After the performance (with lousy sound), Randy presents her with the Hollywood Song Award.

Robert Pattinson now presents a clip of The Imitation Game before honoring Morten Tyldum with the Hollywood Director Award.

Jonah Hill is presenting Hollywood Ensemble to the cast of Foxcatcher. After several group hugs, Steven Carell accepts alongside Channing Tatum.

Angelina Jolie is now presenting Unbroken’s star, Jack O’Connell, with the New Hollywood Award.

Latifah intros Chris Rock and presents him with the Hollywood Comedy Film Award for Top Five. Rock makes fun of the awards show, which at this point is prudent.

The Hollywood Animation Award is being presented by Jennifer Lopez. She almost calls the honoree How To Train Your Dragon 2 “How to DRAIN your dragon.” Gerard Butler accepts the award on behalf of the film, “Thanks for that flawless introduction.”

Latifah now introduces Geena Davis who is presenting the Hollywood Career Achievement Award to Michael Keaton.

Kristen Stewart is presenting Julianne Moore with the Hollwood Actress Award for Still Alice.

A presumably drunk Johnny Depp presents the Hollywood Documentary Award to Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon. Depp is completely wasted. Shep Gordon comes up to the stage to present the award to the film’s director, Mike Myers.

Chadwick Boseman is presenting the Hollywood Blockbuster award to Guardians of the Galaxy. Chris Pratt and director James Gunn accept the award.

Queen Latifah introduces Amy Adams, who’s presenting the Hollywood Actor Award to Benedict Cumberbatch for his work in The Imitation Game.

Ron Howard is presenting the night’s final statue: the Hollywood Film Award, which is going to Gone Girl. Ben Affleck accepts on behalf of the film.
