Avatar heads home with two Golden Globes

The rain poured down on an uncovered red carpet at the 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards last night and thoughts of the earthquake in Haiti dampened the spirits a bit inside too. Many of the stars wore ribbons to show solidarity with the victims and mentions of places to donate were also made throughout the telecast.
Meryl Streep expressed the inner turmoil of attending an event where champagne flows freely while the news channels show images of suffering. She said that she thought about what her mother would day and imagined her response would be, “Partners in Health. Shoot some money to Partners in Health. Put the dress on. Put on a smile. And be damn grateful that you can.”
Ricky Gervais, whose zinging barbs have livened up many a dull awards show, seemed to have some of the sting taken out when his act was stretched to a whole show. Still, he did get off a huge riff on Mel Gibson when he introduced him by saying, “I like a drink as much as the next man…unless that man is Mel Gibson.” He also managed to bite a few of the hands of that feed him by knocking host network NBC and poking fun at the oft-questioned ethics of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association by saying “One thing that can’t be bought is a Golden Globe…officially.”
