Signs tops the weekend

Signs, the new thriller from director M. Night Shyamalan, took the top spot over the weekend with a $60.1 million debut. This was the best opening for the director and his star, Mel Gibson.
Mike Myers’ Austin Powers in Goldmember fell to second place with $31.1 million. Despite universally awful reviews (including ours) Dana Carvey’s The Master of Disguise managed to fool $12.5 million out of the public’s pockets. Martin Lawrence’s concert film, Martin Lawrence Live: Runteldat, took fourth place with $7.3 million which was impressive because of the limited number of screens it played on.
The Tom Hanks flick, Road to Perdition, rounded out the top five with $6.6 million.
