Initial weekend estimates for Dr. Seuss’ The Cat in the Hat were off by about $2 million as the poorly-reviewed flick experienced a bit of a drop on Sunday. The film, which took in $38.3 million over the weekend, easily took the top spot over the Halle Berry vehicle Gothika.
Elf and Will Ferrell continued to tickle funny bones for third place and $18.7 million while Russell Crowe and his crew sailed Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World into fourth with $15.2 million.
Hugh Grant and Love Actually rounded out the top five with $8.6 million.
