Sarah Michelle Gellar’s horror flick, The Grudge, doubled analysts’ expectations this weekend taking the top spot with a $40 million opening. After three weeks, Shark Tale finally left the top spot but still managed a second place showing and another $14.3 million.
Jennifer Lopez and Richard Gere tangoed into the third slot with $8.6 million while the Billy Bob Thornton football flick, Friday Night Lights tackled fourth with $7 million. The puppets of Team America: World Police rounded out the top five with $6.6 million.
Audiences continued to suggest Ben Affleck leave movies for politics as his October turkey, Surviving Christmas, opened in seventh with $4.5 million.
