While Sunday night’s Oscars are all about diamonds and golden statuettes, a more informal affair took place in a tent on the beach in Santa Monica when the 30th Independent Spirit Awards were handed out on Saturday.
Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) won Best Feature as well as Best Male Lead for Michael Keaton and Best Cinematography for Emmanuel Lubezki.
Another awards season favorite, Boyhood, won Best Director for Richard Linklater and Best Supporting Female for Patricia Arquette. Julianne Moore’s performance in Still Alice took Best Female Lead, while J.K. Simmons left the beach with Best Supporting Male for Whiplash.
