Austin Powers in Goldmember, the third installment of the spy spoofs, powered its way to the top spot over the weekend breaking several records in the process. Its estimated $71.5 million haul is the best July opening ever, the best comedy opening and the best opening for star Mike Myers and the film’s studio, New Line Cinema. It also puts it at the fifth best opening of all time.
The Tom Hanks drama, Road to Perdition, fell to 2nd place with a weekend box office of roughly $11 million. Stuart Little 2 took in $10.7 million in 3rd, Men in Black II added another $8.7 million to its total, while Harrison Ford’s K-19: The Widowmaker continued to disappoint with $7.3 million and a 43% drop.
