The 42nd People’s Choice Awards (2016)

Welcome to our coverage of the 42nd Annual People's Choice Awards — the show where the fans get to vote and the winners already know they've won yet act surprised anyway. The ceremony took place on January 6th, 2016.

9:01 PM

Host Jane Lynch opens the show with a song and dance routine set to the tune of Walk the Moon's "Shut Up and Dance."

9:04 PM

"I can sing and dance...I'm like a slightly more masculine Neil Patrick Harris," says Lynch after the number.

9:05 PM

The first presenters of the night are Jack Black and Kate Hudson. They're presenting Favorite Comedic Movie Actress. And the People's Choice Award goes to Melissa McCarthy. As she takes to the stage we're told she's also won Comedic TV Actress as well. Just a reminder, there's no suspense in this show as they're told ahead of time.

9:10 PM

Jane pretends to give an award to Thomas Lennon but then realizes she made a mistake and the real winner was Miss Columbia. Poor Steve Harvey will never live down his Miss Universe mistake.

9:11 PM

Christina Milian and Chris D'Elia now present Breakout Artist. And the People's Choice Award goes to Shawn Mendes.

9:18 PM

The girls from Fox's Grease Live are out to present Favorite Album. And the People's Choice Award goes to Meghan Trainor.

9:20 PM

Lea Michelle and Adam DeVine. They're doing the task of handing out Favorite Action Movie Actor. And the People's Choice Award goes to Chris Hemsworth.

9:26 PM

As we come back from commercial, we're told Favorite Cable TV Actress has gone to Sasha Alexander and she gets the award given to her in her seat without a chance to speak. Melissa Benoist then introduces Shown Mendes performing a medley of his hits or as I loke to call it, a mute break.

9:31 PM

James Corden pitches awards to Jane that are specifically designed to make him win.

9:33 PM

Natalie Dormer and Ed Westwick are out next to present Favorite Dramatic TV Actor. And the People's Choice Award goes to Taylor Kinney.

9:41 PM

Jane Lynch, wearing angel wings to promote her new show, Angel from Hell. The winners of Favorite Actor and Actress In A New TV Series, John Stamos and Priyanka Chopra, are presenting Favorite Movie. And the People's Choice Award goes to Furious 7. We're also told it won Favorite Action Movie. Vin Diesel accepts on behalf of the franchise. His speech goes on for what feels like a few days.

9:51 PM

Abigail Spencer and Josh Holloway then present Favorite Cable TV Drama. And the People's Choice Award goes to Pretty Little Liars.

9:56 PM

"I'm Jane Lynch, the Taylor Swift of 1960," says Lynch as she talks about the gift bag...which turns out to be Sandra Bullock's handbag.

9:57 PM

Code Black's Marcia Gay Harden and Raza Jaffrey announce the nominees for Favorite Movie Actress. Which of course goes to Sandra Bullock. Because she's there. Because she knew. See how this works?

Marcia and Raza now present Favorite Dramatic Movie Actor. And the People's Choice Award goes to Johnny Depp. Depp strolls out to accept.

10:04 PM

Shemar Moore's out next and says, "How am I supposed to follow Johnny Depp?" He talks about tonight's Favorite Humanitarian, Ellen DeGeneres, before introducing Melissa McCarthy to present it to her.

10:11 PM

Ellen takes to the stage to accept the award. "This is crazy, but so deserved," she jokes. "It's strange to get an award for being generous and nice."

10:20 PM

As we come back from commerical we're told that Matt Bellassai is the Favorite Social Media Star, but his on camera moment is ruined by a woman returning to her seat in front of him and the camera focusing on the wrong guy. Meagan Good then introduces a performance by Jason Derulo.

10:25 PM

Alison Brie and Leslie Mann talk about fake tears and then present Favorite Dramatic Movie Actress. And the People's Choice Award goes to Dakota Johnson.

10:31 PM

Nia Long and Mike Epps are presenting Favorite Daytime TV Hosting Team. And the People's Choice Award goes to The Talk. As Sara Gilbert starts her speech, an unidentified man jumps up onstage and grabs the microphone and mumbles something while Sheryl Underwood chides him and Sharon Osbourne gives him the finger, prompting the cameras to quickly cut away.

As we come back from commercial, were told that Maddie Ziegler is the winner of The DailyMail.com Seriously Popular™ Award and Jane Lynch announces The Voice has won Favorite Competition TV Show before introducing a performance by the winner of the most recent Voice, Jordan Smith.

Amber Valetta and Maggie Lawson present Favorite Premium Cable TV Show. And the People's Choice Award goes to Homeland.

10:49 PM

Betsy Brandt and Colin Hanks from Life in Pieces are here to present Favorite Network TV Comedy. And the People's Choice Award goes to The Big Bang Theory. As the cast takes to the stage, we hear that Jim Parsons has won Favorite Comedic TV Actor.

Presenting tonight's final award, we have Clark Gregg and Ming-Na Wen. They're presenting Favorite Network TV Drama. And the People's Choice Award goes to Grey’s Anatomy. We're also told that Ellen Pompeo has won Favorite Dramatic TV Actress.
