The Fall Guy 4K review

David Leitch’s part action, part rom-com The Fall Guy is very loosely based on the 1980s TV series of the same name. Ryan Gosling plays Colt Seavers, a stuntman on Jody Moreno’s directorial debut. Jody (Emily Blunt) just so happens to be Colt’s ex. She’s having a bit of a problem. Her lead actor, Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), has gone missing and she asks Colt to help quietly find him. The quiet part will be an issue as Ryder has been tangling with the wrong people. The cast also includes Hannah Waddingham, Teresa Palmer, Stephanie Hsu, and Winston Duke. Leitch was formerly Brad Pitt’s stunt double and his work here pays homage to stunt performers and practical stunt effects. The Fall Guy has now been released on 4K and I had a chance to take a look.

The 2160p HEVC / H.265 encoded native 4K digital transfer with Dolby Vision and HDR10 is presented in a 2.39:1 aspect ratio. It’s a great video presentation with amazing detail in clothing, facial features and locations. The black levels are nice and deep and there’s no loss of detail in darker scenes. The colour palette ranges from natural tones to really popping primaries.

On the audio side of things, you have the choice of an English Dolby Atmos track which folds back to Dolby TrueHD 7.1. Spanish and French Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 tracks are also available. Subtitles are available for English SDH, French, and Spanish. The soundscape immerse you into the action and stunts so well that you might need an ice bath for your sore muscles. The height channels also get use for effects and ambience. From car chase to explosions, your subwoofer doesn’t get to rest either. Dialogue is clear and well-placed in the mix.

The Fall Guy 4K has two 4K discs, with the second disc containing an extended version of the movie with an additional 20 minutes of action. There’s also a Blu-ray copy of the film as well as a Digital code, though once again, there’s no code for the Canadian version. Is it something we said? The set also comes with over an hour of bonus materials. There’s a gag reel, alternate takes, a breakdown of five of the big stunt scenes, several production and stunt featurettes and audio commentary from director/producer David Leitch and producer Kelly McCormick.

The Fall Guy is a fun film. Combine attractive leads with amazing stunts, a great A/V presentation, and a bunch of extras and you get a fun movie night. Grab the popcorn and drinks, The Fall Guy 4K is recommended.
